How to Get ChatGPT to Recommend Your Brand (2026 GEO Guide)
By RankerToolAI Team · October 5, 2026 · 9 min read
Short version: AI assistants recommend brands that the web already talks about, on pages they trust and cite. You can't pay ChatGPT to mention you, but you can (1) measure where you stand today, (2) get mentioned on the pages AI models already cite, and (3) make your own pages easy for them to quote. This guide explains each step and the tools that help. It is based on how these assistants publicly describe their search features and on the vendors' own documentation — not a controlled lab test. See our methodology.
More buyers now start with a question to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews instead of ten blue links: "what's the best CRM for a 5-person agency?", "which AI video tool is cheapest?". The answer usually names three to five brands. If yours isn't one of them, you're invisible for that buyer — no matter where you rank on page one of Google.
Improving that is called GEO (generative engine optimization), sometimes AEO (answer engine optimization). It overlaps heavily with good SEO, but the measurement and a few of the tactics are different.
How AI Assistants Decide Which Brands to Mention
There are two sources an assistant draws on when it answers a "best tool for X" question:
- Training data — what the model absorbed from the web up to its cutoff. Brands that were widely and consistently discussed get "remembered". You influence this slowly, over months or years.
- Live web search — ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews fetch pages in real time and summarize them, usually showing the sources they cited. This is where you can move faster: if the pages being cited mention you, the answer is far more likely to mention you too.
That second point is the practical core of GEO. The assistant isn't inventing its shortlist; it's summarizing review sites, "best of" roundups, comparison posts, forum threads and documentation it found for that query. Get onto those pages and you get into the answer.
Step 1: Measure Where You Stand (You Can't Guess This)
AI answers vary between runs, between models and between slightly different wordings of the same question. Asking ChatGPT once and seeing your name is not a measurement. You need the same set of buyer questions run repeatedly across several assistants, with results tracked over time.
What to track:
- Mention rate — in what share of answers does your brand appear at all?
- Position — named first, or tacked on at the end?
- Share of voice — how often you appear compared with each competitor, on the same questions.
- Cited sources — which URLs the assistant used. This becomes your target list for Step 2.
- Sentiment — whether the description of your brand is accurate, current and positive.
One trap: questions that already contain your brand name ("is Acme good?") will almost always mention you and inflate the numbers. Keep those separate from neutral category questions ("best project tool for agencies").
Tool for this step: LLM Pulse runs your prompts on a schedule across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and reports mention rate, a position-weighted visibility score, share of voice and cited sources. It filters out brand-naming prompts from competitor comparisons, which avoids the trap above. From €49/mo with a 14-day free trial.
Step 2: Get Mentioned on the Pages AI Already Cites
Once you know which pages the assistants pull from for your category, the job looks a lot like classic digital PR and link building — with a sharper target list:
- "Best X" roundups and comparison posts on niche blogs. Pitch the author with a specific, useful reason to include you (a feature their list is missing, a price point, a use case), not a generic request.
- Review platforms such as G2, Capterra and Trustpilot. Assistants frequently cite them; an empty profile is a missed citation.
- Community threads on Reddit and Quora where people ask for recommendations. Participate honestly — undisclosed self-promotion gets removed and can backfire.
- Your own integrations and partners' pages — "works with" directories and partner listings are easy, legitimate mentions.
This is slow, manual work: finding the right posts, finding the editor's email, writing a pitch that isn't spam, following up. It's also where most teams give up.
Tool for this step: MentionAgent automates the outreach: it finds niche posts that could mention you, verifies the editor's email, writes a pitch about that exact post, sends from a separate warmed-up domain so your main email is protected, and drafts replies through to a live link. From $99/mo, with free drafts to try first. One caution: avoid leaning on link swaps at scale — reciprocal linking is something Google's spam policies warn against.
Step 3: Make Your Own Pages Easy to Quote
When an assistant does land on your site, it needs to find a clear, quotable answer quickly. The same habits that help featured snippets help here:
- Say plainly what you are and who you're for in the first paragraph of your homepage and key product pages — "X is a [category] for [audience]" is easier to summarize than a slogan.
- Publish real pricing. "Contact sales" pages leave the assistant to guess or to quote a competitor's page about you.
- Answer comparison questions yourself with honest "X vs Y" and "alternatives to X" pages. If you don't, someone else's page becomes the source.
- Use FAQ sections and structured data (FAQ, Product, Organization schema) so facts are unambiguous.
- Keep facts consistent everywhere — website, review profiles, directories. Conflicting prices or feature lists make assistants hedge or skip you.
- Don't block AI crawlers by accident. Check your robots.txt and firewall rules if you want to be fetched by AI search features.
Step 4: Re-measure Monthly and Fix What's Wrong
Go back to your tracking every month. Look for three things: questions where competitors appear and you don't (target the pages cited there), new cited sources you haven't reached yet, and answers that describe you inaccurately — often a sign an outdated page somewhere is being used as the source. Fix the source, not the symptom.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you pay ChatGPT to recommend your brand?
No. ChatGPT's answers are not sold as ad placements. Brands get mentioned because the model learned about them or because the web pages it fetches for a question mention them. The practical route is getting covered on the pages AI assistants cite.
What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?
GEO is the practice of improving how often and how favorably AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews mention your brand in their answers. It overlaps with SEO but adds AI-specific measurement, such as mention rate and share of voice across assistants.
How do I check if ChatGPT mentions my brand?
Asking once isn't enough because answers vary. Run the same neutral buyer questions repeatedly across several assistants and track the results over time, either manually in a spreadsheet or with a tracker such as LLM Pulse.
Do backlinks help with AI search visibility?
Editorial mentions on relevant, trusted pages help twice: they are classic SEO signals, and they are the kind of pages AI assistants fetch and cite when answering. Paid or reciprocal link schemes carry the same risks with Google as before.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?
Changes to pages that assistants fetch live can show up within weeks once those pages are re-crawled. Influencing what models learned in training is much slower, because it depends on future training runs.
